Additionally, Bovada hosts the innovative Hot Drop Jackpot games, where the prize is guaranteed to be won in a set timeframe. For poker fans who prefer facing the casino, there are versions of Tri-Card, Stud, and Hold’em in the casino section.

Besides those titles, Bovada has a full poker room where you can play cash or zone Hold’em, Omaha, or Hi-Lo against other people. There are also Jackpot SNGs as well as tournaments that run around the clock, which means there is always one happening soon. Buy-ins for these start at $0.50, while you can play other tournaments from $1.10 and all the way up to hundreds of dollars.

On the sportsbook side, Bovada is a great choice for American players because of its excellent coverage of US leagues, including NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, and NCAA matches. Across the major leagues, there is a varied range of prop and player-specific bets available. Wagers start at $0.50 and go up to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the league and market.

In short, we found Bovada to be a well-rounded, all-in-one site across all aspects of gambling. Why not read our full review to see if it’s a good fit for you?

BetUS - Best US Sports Betting Site

BetUS Circle Icon

BetUS is one of the oldest betting sites accepting US residents, and there is a reason for its longevity. Though it has an impressive casino offering, the sportsbook is where BetUS shines.

The site has odds on all the major US sporting leagues, including NBA, NFL, and MLB, as well as foreign leagues, entertainment, novelty, and financial markets. We found the odds to be very competitive, especially when first released. You can expect -108/-108 odds for popular markets.

Contests with cash prizes run each week on the site and often feature major events like March Madness. Some are free-to-enter, while some with progressive jackpots have buy-ins of $10-500. As well as participating in them, sports fans can enjoy a vast amount of regular previews, picks, news, and opinions through BetUS TV and the Locker Room blog.

The gambling site even has a toll-free line for US players looking for assistance.

Ignition Casino - Best US Poker Site

Ignition Casino Circle Logo

For US poker players, it doesn’t get much better than Ignition. The network which Ignition runs on consistently ranks 1st in traffic from America, Canada, and South America.

However, don’t let the competition scare you. Ignition offers the option to play at anonymous tables, which means sharks can’t target weaker players. It also means that trackers and other software won’t work, so the overall standard of the games becomes softer.

You’ll find tournaments, SNGs, zone poker (fast-fold), and cash games on site. Limits are flexible, ranging from a few cents to thousands of dollars.

New players can claim a 100% match up to $1,000 when depositing with credit cards or a 150% match up to $1,500 with cryptocurrency. This bonus will be unlocked as you play poker games at a rate of $1 for every 30 Ignition miles earned.

Cafe Casino - Fastest Payouts for Americans

Cafe Casino Circle Logo

Cafe Casino offers the fastest casino payouts in the industry. Players from the USA can withdraw via cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, BitcoinCash, and BitcoinSV), MatchPay, player transfers, bank wire, and checks. Checks are subject to a $75 fee, but all other withdrawal methods are completely free.

Cafe Casino is currently the only recommended casino site with instant payouts available for US players through MatchPay and player transfers. Cryptocurrency withdrawals can take up to 24 hours (but are usually much, much faster). Checks are by far the slowest method at 7 days, but even then, this is still significantly quicker than the 15 business days which other casinos offer.

Limits are reasonable, too, though they vary by method. It’d be nice to see Cafe Casino widen the limits for bank wire ($1,500-2,500), though we think the huge range for other methods more than makes up for it. Minimum withdrawals start at $10 via player transfers or crypto (except Ethereum at $50). The maximum payout via most cryptocurrencies is unlimited, which is ideal for high stakes players, while player transfers are capped at $15,000, Ethereum at $2,500, checks at $2,000, and MatchPay at $1,000.

Slots.lv - Best USA Gambling App

Slots.lv, Logo, Circle

Slots.lv is our recommended gambling app for those keen to play on mobile or tablet devices. The fully-optimized mobile app works in the browser, meaning there is no need to download any software which would take up space on your device.

The hamburger menu in the top right corner provides easy navigation, and the 24/7 live chat in the bottom right can connect you to customer support should you need them.

Mobile players in the US can enjoy almost the entire catalog of Slots.lv’s 200+ games, including the ever-popular jackpot titles like Shopping Spree and Oasis Dreams. We were particularly impressed by the inclusion of games which have been designed with small screens in mind.

For example, the European Roulette, Lucky Wheel, Craps, and Blackjack titles all have a single-color background which makes the gameplay stand out when compared to the busier table designs found elsewhere. These games can be played in landscape or portrait mode, with the buttons and scale adjusting to suit your device.

Las Atlantis - Biggest Bonuses for US Players

Las Atlantis Casino Circle Icon

Las Atlantis’ welcome promotion could see you claim as much as $14,000 in bonus funds. This match deposit offers a 280% boost up to $2,800, which can be claimed five times.

The minimum deposit in order to claim the bonus is $10 via Neosurf, $20 via cryptocurrency, and $30 via credit cards, which is lower than many other sites which require deposits of $50 or $100 in order to claim a bonus of this size. This bonus money comes with a 35x bonus + deposit wagering requirement and can be used to play slots, board games, scratch cards, and keno.

If this bonus doesn’t appeal, it’s worth noting that Las Atlantis also offers six additional welcome bonuses to US players, including exclusive cryptocurrency boosts and free spins for slot lovers.

How We Choose the Best USA Gambling Sites Online

Our expert team thoroughly tests each site in order to determine its legitimacy and separate the wheat from the chaff. When we evaluate gambling sites that accept US players, we study the following criteria:

  • Safe and Secure for US Players: We favor sites with mandatory account verification, which are licensed and regulated by an internationally-recognized authority, use state-of-the-art encryption, or voluntarily have their games audited by an independent body such as iTech Labs or eCogra.
  • Variety of Convenient and Fast US Payments: We value gambling sites that offer a variety of fast banking options, such as Cafe Casino, where players can deposit/withdraw instantly.
  • Popular US Gambling Options: We look for sportsbooks that feature US leagues, casinos with popular games, and poker rooms with plenty of variety to give players the greatest range of options possible.
  • Bonuses and Promotions for US Players: We evaluate the bonuses and promotions on site to ensure they are generous, fair, and varied.
  • Reliable Support for US Customers: The vast majority of gambling sites offer 24/7 live chat and email support, but we prefer gambling sites like BetUS, which also have toll-free phone numbers for US residents to use.

How to Pick the Best US Gambling Site for Your Needs

By now, you probably have a good idea of what you’re looking for in a gambling site. To help narrow your selection further, we recommend weighing up each site based on the following:

What Type of Gambling Are You Looking For?

If you’re looking to bet on sports, you can immediately rule out sites like Cafe Casino and Las Atlantis, which don’t have sportsbooks. However, if you’re looking to dabble in different aspects of gambling, sites like Bovada, which offer three in one, might be a good fit.

Once you’ve established what type(s) of gambling you’d like to do, choose a site that has plenty of options. For example, if you’d like to bet exclusively on the NBA, consider a site with a great parlay builder like BetUS.

What’s Your Bankroll?

Consider whether the gambling site suits your bankroll. Sites like Bovada have low minimum deposits and withdrawals ($10 via Bitcoin) and so might be the perfect choice for low-stakes players. On the other hand, a gambling site with high maximum bets may appeal to those with bigger bankrolls. Some of the live dealer games at Slots.lv, for example, accept bets of up to $10,000 per hand.

What Payment Is Convenient for You?

Virtually all online casinos accept Visa, Mastercard, and cryptocurrency deposits, but if you’d rather deposit via eWallets, wire transfers, or prepaid cards, this will narrow your options. Consider whether you’d like to claim a bonus, too, as some casino sites limit the deposit methods through which you are eligible to claim one. For example, at Ignition Casino, you can only claim the welcome bonus with a credit card or a Bitcoin deposit.

Desktop, Mobile, or Both?

Think about which devices you’re going to play on, and let that guide your decision. Casino sites such as Slots.lv are suited to smartphones because they have hundreds of mobile-compatible games, responsive interfaces, and are playable in landscape or portrait mode. Similarly, great mobile sportsbooks (such as the one at Bovada) make it easy to find and place your bet of choice.

Top Payment Options for Gambling from the USA

Each gambling site accepts a different range of payment methods with variable limits and fees, so you should choose one which allows you to deposit/withdraw money in the way you’d like. Be aware that sites often offer different withdrawal options from deposit ones. Below you’ll find more information about the most popular banking methods for US players at gambling sites.

Cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are our preferred way to deposit and withdraw because they are fast and usually fee-free. While some sites require approval which can delay the payout process, sites such as Cafe Casino instantly process payouts which means you could receive your money via crypto in under an hour.

The minimum deposit for cryptocurrencies is often lower than other methods too. For example, Bovada accepts crypto deposits from as low as $10, whereas the limit for credit and debit cards is $20.

Matchpay

While eWallets are rarely accepted at US-facing gambling sites, it is still possible to use them through MatchPay, a peer-to-peer trading platform. Transactions are instantaneous, though you will have to do a little extra leg work in that you buy and sell gambling site credit through the app. You can then transfer this credit into your casino or bank account. MatchPay can transfer funds from top-trusted digital wallets like PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, and ApplePay.

Credit and Debit Cards

Credit and debit cards are undoubtedly the USA’s favorite way to pay. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, while AMEX can be used at a more limited range of sites, including Cafe Casino. While credit and debit cards are an instant way to deposit, you should be aware that they often come with fees attached. Further, payouts via credit and debit cards are hard to come by. If you’re set on playing with cards, check out Las Atlantis, which offers fee-free deposits and withdrawals.

Is Online Gambling in the USA Legal?

Online gambling in the USA isn’t against the law, but the division of federal and state legislation makes the legal landscape complicated.

Online gambling (whether using fiat or cryptocurrency) is not federally regulated, so each state can make its own rules on what can and cannot operate. This is why some states have dedicated regulatory bodies to license casinos and sportsbooks in their area, while others oppose them entirely. Similarly, this is why the minimum gambling age varies from state to state. Some states, such as Washington, Minnesota, and Idaho, have a minimum age of 18, while most others have opted for 21.

Despite the current lack of federal regulation, there are a few pieces of legislation that are frequently cited in relation to online gambling. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 banned businesses from accepting payments for online gambling activities. However, this law was focused on those operating gambling sites and did not prohibit US players from betting online.

For this reason, many online gambling sites based outside the USA accept American players. These sites are regulated in other jurisdictions (such as Curaçao and Malta), which makes them safe for US players. However, you should know that even if you play at a casino or sportsbook based outside of the US, your gambling winnings are still taxable. Tax rates vary by state. Additionally, all gambling income should be reported on your federal tax return.

Take a look at our dedicated guide for more information about the topic.

Online Gambling Availability by State

Given that states are free to govern online gambling within their jurisdiction, it’s no surprise that the landscape differs greatly from place to place. As of July 2023, 25 states have sports betting, seven regulate online casinos, and five regulate poker rooms.

Below, you’ll find the availability of online gambling in your state:

  • Regulated – The state actively monitors gambling sites and may provide licenses.
  • Pending – The state has passed (or is expected to pass) legislation that would regulate online gambling
  • Offshore – The state does not regulate online gambling. Players can still use safe sites which are legal and regulated in other jurisdictions outside of the US.

Timeline of Online Gambling in the US

From humble beginnings, gambling in the US has grown to be worth billions of dollars. According to Forbes, online gambling generated close to $4 billion dollars of revenue in the United States in 2021.

That’s only counting the six states that had, by that time, legalized online casinos and/or sportsbooks within their jurisdiction. The real number is much higher, given the prevalence of gambling sites based outside of the country that accept US players. Take a look at the evolution of online gambling in the US here:

  • 2018 - The US Supreme Court Overturn Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA): PASPA was a 1992 federal ban that made sports betting illegal in almost all US states. Following the overturning of the act, many states established legalized sports betting.
  • 2011 - Poker’s Black Friday: Black Friday refers to April 15th, 2011, when the US Department of Justice seized the bank accounts of some of the nation's most popular poker sites under the UIGEA. PokerStars, Full Tilt, and Absolute Poker suspended operations, and players were locked out of their accounts while the indictments against the site's owners were unsealed.
  • 2006 - The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) Passes: The UIGEA was an attempt by the federal government to ban banks and other financial businesses from processing payments related to online gambling. In response, many online casinos began to block US customers from playing.
  • 2003 - First Live Dealer Casino Launched: Playtech, who have long been at the forefront of online gambling, launched the first live dealer casino to industry acclaim. Other operators would soon follow suit.
  • 1999 - Attempts to Ban Online Gambling: The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, a bill that would have banned internet gambling, was passed by the US Senate. However, it failed to become law after not passing the House of Representatives.
  • 1996 - First Sports Bet Placed Online: In January 1996, a keen soccer fan logged on to a sportsbook and bet $50 on the Tottenham Hotspur game. Not only did he win the bet, he made history by becoming the first person to place a sports bet online.
  • 1994 - First Online Casino Site: Three years after the World Wide Web opened to the public, the first online casinos were founded. It's hard to say which came first, but MicroGaming’s The Gaming Club and CryptoLogic’s Inter Casino both became key players.

US Responsible Gambling

Online gambling can be a fun hobby, but only if you gamble responsibly. Responsible gambling means adopting a set of good habits to help you stay in control of your game. In turn, this will prevent you from making irrational gambling decisions which can have serious consequences on your financial, social, physical, and mental health. To gamble responsibly, follow these principles:

  • Set a budget for your gambling and stick to it
  • Bet with only disposable income, which you can comfortably afford to lose
  • Know and accept the odds of each bet
  • Stay calm and avoid playing when angry or upset
  • Never gamble under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Take regular breaks
  • Accept that any money lost is gone and never play on to try and win it back

If you feel that you may not be gambling responsibly, the following organizations can help. Here are some free resources available to US players.
