There’s a lot to like about Vingegaard as a competitor. He’s a well-rounded racer who can navigate all types of terrain. The Danish athlete also has solid instincts and knows when to go into attack mode. He can handle a steep hill or an ascent as well as anyone.

Here’s my concern regarding Vingegaard: Will he have it in him to win La Vuelta after he just won the Tour de France? Will he have enough time to prepare? The Tour de France ended in late July, giving Vingegaard just a month to recuperate and train.

Vingegaard isn’t my favorite pick, but that’s mainly because of the quick turnaround and the low odds. It’s also rare for racers to win La Vuelta and the Tour de France in the same year. The last person to pull it off was Chris Froome in 2017.

La Vuelta is also Roglic’s favorite Grand Tour event. He’s won the race three times and had the chance to defend his title in 2022. Unfortunately, Roglic suffered a devastating crash during the 16th stage that forced him to withdraw.

When you look at his recent form, Roglic appears to be in peak physical condition. He finished first in both the Tirreno-Adriatico and the Volta a Catalunya in 2023. Furthermore, Roglic has extra motivation to win La Vuelta after the disappointment from last year.

Remco Evenepoel

Age: 23
Country: Belgium
Team: Soudal–Quick-Step

The reigning La Vuelta champion is a top contender but not the main favorite. Evenepoel, who’s won just a single Grand Tour race, will try to defend his title. The young 23-year-old competitor is already on pace for a prolific career.

I think Evenepoel is highly underrated. He’s now a proven winner who can handle stage races as well as anyone. The Belgian also has podium finishes in the Volta a Catalunya and the Tour de Suisse this year.

Evenepoel was in the lead while competing in the Giro d’Italia back in May. Unfortunately, he tested positive for COVID-19, which forced him to withdraw. I’m sure he was devastated, so I expect him to challenge his disappointment in a positive way.

I know that Evenepoel will bring his A-game to Spain. After a disappointing result in the Giro d’Italia, the young racer wants redemption. It’s also known that Evenepoel underwent altitude training in Spain earlier this year to prepare for La Vuelta 2023.

Best La Vuelta 2023 Sleepers
