What Can You Bet on While Most of Sports Has Been Shut Down?

Sportsbook Futures - Stock Market - Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - Survivor Season 40 Cast - Guy Happy Celebrating

The global coronavirus outbreak has shut down most of the sports in recent weeks.

The NBA was first to call a halt to its season after one of its players tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The MLB, NHL, MLS and the NCAA followed it. Likewise, auto races, golf tournaments, and tennis tournaments were also canceled due to the virus scare. Recently, the Nevada State Athletic Commission also banned combat sports in response to the global pandemic. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention also recommended that the gatherings of 50 or more people in the United States will be banned for at least eight weeks.

With sports almost gone, social distancing measures implemented, the need for recreation and escape has increased. Sure, some people are content with watching old games at the League Pass applications and some have turned to Netflix and the likes for movies. But for the millions of bettors around the world, they are worried because these live sports games and matches are the lifeblood of betting sites. However, while most of sports have been shut down, the betting sites are alive and well and there are still plenty of betting markets available out there.

Not All Sports Bets Are Off

Technically, not all sports bets are off. When you look at SportsBetting.ag, there are still bets available for sports like baseball, basketball, football, and hockey. But these bets are all Futures bets or bets which are made for events that will take place in the future. For example, when you go to the basketball section of SportsBetting.ag, you will find futures bets for the NBA and NCAA.

For the NBA, the futures bets available as of 03/23/20 are the odds to win the Eastern and Western Conferences plus the odds to win the 2020 NBA Finals. There are also Players Futures bets on who will be the MVP and Rookie of the Year in the NBA this season. If you’re into more interesting betting, there is also a futures bet on when the NBA will resume play. For the NCAA, the only futures bet currently up are for the winner of the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the winner of the 2020 Naismith Trophy.

The site accepts wagers for these futures bets but the problem with futures bets is that your money gets locked up until that event happens. If there was no suspension, the NBA conference winners would be known before the start of the playoffs or by April, the champions by June, and the award winners also in June. However, since there is no certainty as to when the season will resume, if ever it does, then the bet could be locked up much longer.

Remember :

That the latest news is that the NBA is looking to resume before July 1 so that’s more than three months from now, if ever.

Futures Bets for MLB, NFL, and NHL

The same thing is with baseball, football, and hockey. The MLB futures odds available are the division winners, American League and National League winners, and World Series Winners. Players Futures bets include Most Home Regular Season Home Runs for 2020, the 2020 AL and NL MVP, Cy Young Awardee, Rookie of the Year awards. For the NFL, futures bets include the Division Winners, AFC and NFC champions, NFL MVP and the Super Bowl winners. There are also prop bets available for the 2020 NFL Draft. There over/under team wins odds are also available at SportsBetting. The same goes for the NHL which also has futures odds for conference winners and the Stanley Cup winner.

As we said previously, these prop bets for the MLB, NFL and NHL are the same as the ones in the NBA. You can make them now but you don’t know when these bets would be paid out because all these leagues are currently suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak. And if you base your timetable of the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s eight weeks from last Sunday or around two months from now. That’s not even guaranteed and even if the leagues decide to resume by then, we’re not sure when because these leagues have canceled practices and have sent their players home for the break.

If you ask me, the futures bet that will likely get paid first is the one for the 2020 NFL draft.

Three days ago, the NFL announced that the draft will proceed as scheduled on April 23-25, 2020. It did not say how exactly but the statement mentioned that the league is “exploring innovative processes” to do it. I think that since the draft is merely a selection process, they can do a virtual or online draft. So yeah, that’s a bet that can be made without waiting too long for the payout. Expect more betting markets to open once the draft dates near because I’m sure everyone is hungry to see NFL bets online soon. Other than those, there aren’t too many bets to make.

Combat Sports Also Cancelled

Boxing and UFC matches have been canceled as well up to at least March 25, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. There are several boxing fights on the odds board but there are no high profile fights except perhaps the May 23, 2020 showdown between Oleksandr Usyk and Dereck Chisora. The UFC has canceled its next three events but is hoping that UFC 249 will push through on April 18, 2020, because of a very special reason.

UFC 249 will feature one of the most highly anticipated UFC bouts ever in Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. That fight had been postponed for times before due to injuries to both fighters.

Currently:

The UFC is looking for ways to make that fight happen but that’s still hanging in the balance. The odds for Khabib vs Ferguson are still up at SportsBetting and the odds for confirmed and probable bouts for April onwards are still up. But again, we don’t know if these fights will push through.

When you talk about the UFC though, you’re talking about Dana White who really didn’t want his events to be suspended but in the end, he no longer could find a venue to host them because of the COVID 19 virus outbreak. The NSAC will convene again later this month to discuss their next course of action. But given the way the coronavirus has spread globally, it’s hard to believe that the NSAC will allow fights to resume soon although bouts involve individuals, they could be held in a gathering with fewer than 50 people in order to circumvent the CDC’s recommendations.

Other Betting Alternatives

If you’re frustrated by now about the uncertainty of sports bets except the NFL draft, don’t despair because of there plenty of betting alternatives. Again, let’s look at SportsBetting and you’ll find betting odds for the WWE. Ok sure, it’s sports entertainment or whatever you call it. But there are actual fights where one fighter is declared a winner. Wrestlemania 36 is fast approaching. It’s the Super Bowl of pro wrestling and there are so many betting markets on that event which will take place on April 4-5, 2020 in multiple venues, perhaps to circumvent the CDC’s recommendation.

Then you can also bet on politics and the U.S. Presidential elections. The top betting sites have markets on the Electoral College, Democrat nominees, Odds to win the presidency, and Popular vote.

If politics isn’t your thing, then there are also bets on Bitcoin prices and the prices for the stocks of Amazon, American Airlines, Apple, Costco, Disney, and many more companies.

There are also entertainment bets related to the 18th season of the TV Show American Idol so you can bet on those as well. Markets on the TV series Survivor season 40 and the National Spelling Bee are also online. Heck, the odds on this year’s Hotdog Eating contest are also up.

When you look at other betting sites, they have special bets that you might be interested in. They offer bets like whether Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will reconcile before the end of 2020, Beyonce gets divorced until December 31, 2020, or Maria Sharapova to move to Russia before the end of 2020. I mean these bets are still futures bets but at least the dates are there so you know for how long your money will be on hold. And yes, they are interesting and fun. It makes you forget all the scare about this coronavirus. So for as long as you have a device and internet connection, there are still plenty to bet on right now.
