The Grizzlies are hanging on to the 8th seed in the Western Conference. Memphis is currently two and a half-game ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans and three games in front of the San Antonio Spurs for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They are coming off a win over the L.A. Lakers which snapped a five-game losing streak. The Hawks are on a roll right now with four wins in their last six games played. Atlanta defeated the Portland Trail Blazers in their last outing to move to 8.5 games behind the Brooklyn Nets for the 8th playoff seed in the West.

Grizzlies Snap Five-Game Losing Skid

The Memphis Grizzlies snapped a five-game losing skid with a big 105-88 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in Memphis on Saturday. At 29-31 SU, Memphis currently holds a two and a half-game edge over the New Orleans Pelicans in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Ja Morant had 27 points and a personal-best 14 assists as Memphis defeated the team it could very well play in the playoffs if they hang on. Dillon Brooks added 24 points while Jonas Valanciunas 22 points and 20 rebounds for Memphis. The Grizzlies are 5-0 SU this season when holding their opponent to under 100 points.

The Grizzlies are ranked 14th in the league in scoring at 112.5 points per game. They are the top passing team in the NBA at 27.1 assists per contest and they are 8th off the boards at 46.2 rebounds per outing. Memphis ranks 25th in scoring defense at 115.2 points per game allowed.

Back to Back Wins

The Atlanta Hawks defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 129-117 on Saturday night to pick up back to back wins. In their previous outing, the Hawks beat the Brooklyn Nets also by double-digits at 141-118. Although the Hawks are nearly out of the playoff race at third from the bottom in the East at 8.5 games behind the 8th seeded Nets, Atlanta’s resurgence has seen them win four out of their last six assignments.

Trae Young led the Hawks with 25 points and 15 assists while John Collins contributed 24 points and 10 rebounds. De’Andre Hunter also scored 22 points with six three-point baskets made as Atlanta shot 42.9% from behind the three-point line and has made a total of 37 three-pointers in the last two games despite being the worst three-point shooting team in the league this season.

The Hawks rank 17th in the league in scoring at 111.2 points per game. They are 22nd in rebounding at 43.1 boards grabbed per contest and are 20th in passing at 23.7 assists per outing. Atlanta is next to last when it comes to scoring defense at 119.1 opponents points per game allowed.

Who Wins?

Memphis is 1-5 SU in their last five games played. The Grizzlies are 2-5 SU in their last seven games played on the road, 4-1 SU in their last five games against the Eastern Conference, and 5-0 SU in their last five games against the Southeast Division. Atlanta is 4-2 SU in their last six games played. The Hawks are 5-1 SU in their last six games played at home, and 4-1 SU in their last five games played in March. Head to head, the Hawks are 6-4 SU in their last 10 games played against the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies got a much-needed win last Saturday. Memphis had dropped five in a row and their hold of the 8th spot in the West is slowly slipping away. They blasted a Lakers team that played at full strength and that is a good confidence booster for them. Memphis is just 12-17 SU on the road this season.

The Hawks are showing signs of life although it may be too late for their playoff ambitions. Atlanta has won four out of its last six games played and they have picked up solid wins over Heat, Mavs, Nets, and Blazers during that period. Trae Young and John Collins are having terrific seasons for Atlanta.

I like the Grizzlies here despite Atlanta playing well as of late. The Grizzlies are a good defensive team and they can hold down Trae Young here. Ja Morant and his squad are coming off a huge win over the Los Angeles Lakers and I think that they will have enough momentum on Monday night to win this game. I’ll take the plus points and Memphis.

Both teams are in the Bottom 3 when it comes to scoring defense and they also play at a very high pace. With two offensively gifted young point guards in Morant and Young leading these teams, I expect a shootout where defense is just an option. Memphis has allowed at least 117 points in four out of their last six assignments while the Hawks have given up 117 or more in seven out of their last eight games played.
