Clemson Tigers vs LSU Tigers Logos - 2020 National Championship Logo

The top-ranked LSU Tigers face the 3rd ranked defending national champions Clemson Tigers in the College Football Championship Game on January 13, 2020, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The LSU Tigers coasted with an easy 63-28 win over Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl to advance to the title game. Meanwhile, the Clemson Tigers needed a late score to defeat 2nd ranked Ohio State 29-23 in the Fiesta Bowl to return to the College Football Championship Game. Clemson is looking for its second straight national title and its third in the last four seasons while LSU is aiming at its first championships since 2007.

The LSU Tigers are the favorites in this game while the Clemson Tigers are underdogs for the first time this season and for the first time since facing Alabama in last season’s College Football Championship game.

Lawrence Undefeated as Starter

The Clemson Tigers have been the dominant team in College Football during the past three seasons. Clemson has won 29 consecutive games and two out of the last three national titles. In their last game at the Fiesta Bowl, Clemson crawled out of a 0-16 deficit to advance to the national title with a 29-23 win over #2 Ohio State. Trevor Lawrence threw the winning touchdown with two minutes left in the game. Lawrence is undefeated since taking over the starting QB role at Clemson.

Lawrence has thrown for 3,341 passing yards with 36 touchdowns and 8 interceptions this season. Travis Etienne has rushed for 1,536 yards with 18 touchdowns on 192 carries. Junior Tee Higgins has caught a total of 1,115 yards with 13 touchdowns on 56 catches. Justyn Rose has 61 catches for 789 yards with 8 touchdowns.

After a one-point victory over North Carolina in Week 5, Clemson has gone 9-0 SU and 8-1 ATS while averaging 49.3 points per game and allowing just 11.2 points per outing. For the season, they are giving up an average of 10.6 points per game and they held Ohio State to their lowest output of the year in the Fiesta Bowl. The Clemson Tigers defense has allowed more than three touchdowns in only one game this season.

Burrow’s Incredible Year

2019 Heisman Trophy Winner Joe Burrow has had an incredible year and he is looking to complete it with a national title victory over the defending champions Clemson Tigers. Aside from close wins over Top 10 teams Texas, Auburn and Alabama, the Tigers have cruised this season. In their last game played, Burrow threw a record seven touchdown passes in the first half and ran for an 8th TD during their 63-28 semifinal win.

LSU’s offensive display against Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl didn’t come as a surprise. The LSU Tigers led the nation in scoring at 48.9 points per game during the regular season. They have a balanced attack led by Burrow’s passing and Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the ground. However, the LSU defense allows 221.7 passing yards per game that Clemson can exploit.

Joe Burrow has thrown for a total of 5,208 passing yards with a ridiculous 55 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has rushed for a total of 1,304 yards with 16 scores on 199 carries. Ja’Marr Chase has caught 75 passes for a total of 1,559 yards with 18 touchdown grabs. Justin Jefferson has a total of 1,434 receiving yards with 18 touchdowns on 102 grabs.

Who Wins?

Clemson is 10-0 SU in their last 10 games played. The Tigers are 4-0 SU on the road and 4-0 SU when playing on a neutral venue this season. They are also 5-0 SU in their last five games played against the Southeast Conference. Louisiana State is also 10-0 SU in their last 10 games played. The LSU Tigers are 4-0 SU on the road and 3-0 SU in a neutral site this season. They are also 10-1 SU in their last 11 games played against the Atlantic Coast Conference.

LSU punched its ticket to this game with a 63-28 dismantling of Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl. 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow went 21-27 for 403 yards with seven touchdowns in the first half alone. That’s the kind of offensive firepower that the LSU Tigers possess.

The Clemson Tigers are 25-0 SU and 19-6 ATS since Trevor Lawrence took over as the starting quarterback in Week 5 of the previous season. This win streak includes their 2018 National title game win over Alabama. In the Fiesta Bowl, Lawrence rallied Clemson to a victory over Ohio State.

LSU has the best offense in the nation while Clemson’s defense is the best in the country. When betting in a game like this, I’d go with the team with the better defense and in this case, the better team is also the defending champion. However, I think the LSU Tigers’ offense has been incredible this year and while Clemson can hold them down, I don’t think that defense will be enough to prevent Burrow and company from scoring enough points to win this game.

LSU Tigers

Other Bets to Make

The Clemson Tigers are 5-0 ATS in their last five games played. They are 5-1 ATS in their last six Monday games and 8-1 ATS in their last nine games as the betting underdog. The LSU Tigers are 11-3-2 ATS in their last 16 games played. They are 1-4 ATS in their last five Monday games played, and 3-0 ATS in three games played on a neutral venue this season.

Spread Odds:

  • Clemson +5.5 (-110) | LSU -5.5 (-110)

The LSU Tigers earned their stripes during the regular season and are the top team in College Football this season. However, I cannot simply put aside the Clemson Tigers. They have been here before and are the defending national champions. Trevor Lawrence and Tee Higgins make them dangerous through the air while Travis Etienne makes them a threat on the ground. They are also backed by an awesome defense that has allowed the fewest points by any team this season. I think LSU has a better chance of winning but I think it will be a close game decided by a field goal or less. I’ll take the plus points here and roll with the defending champions.

Clemson +5.5

The total has gone under in six out of the last 10 games played by Clemson. The over is 3-1 in their four games at a neutral venue, and the over is also 5-1 in their last six January games played. The total has gone over in 12 out of the last 17 games played by the LSU Tigers. The over is 2-1 in three games at a neutral venue, and the over is also 10-5 in their last 15 games when playing as the betting favorites.

Over/Under Odds:

  • Over 69.5 (-105) | Under 69.5 (-115)
  • Odds from TitanBet as of 01/05/20

This is a battle between the team which has allowed the fewest points in the nation this season in Clemson and the team which has scored the most points in college football this year in LSU. So what gives here? I think Clemson’s defense will be the key in this game. LSU may be the more talented team but Clemson has the defense to slow down the LSU Tigers. The Clemson Tigers have seen 13 out of their last 19 bowl games go under the total. The experience of the defending champs is going to prevent a shootout here.
