It doesn’t matter if you’re planning to make your first casino trip soon or have been gambling for years, you can improve your experience by picking up a new tip or trick.
I’ve put together 17 tips for casino players of all experience levels to help you have more fun, play longer, and have the best chance to win.
1 – Sign Up for the Player’s Club or Slot’s Club
Many online casinos and most land based casinos have some sort of player’s rewards or comps club available for players. Different casinos call them different names, but the most common ones are called the slot’s club or the player’s club.
If you don’t know how to sign up for an account, ask anyone who works at the casino. When you play online, look for a link to the club or send an email to the support department.
Once you’re a member of the club, always make sure to present your club card when you play table games and put it into the machine when you play slot machines or video poker.
As you gamble you earn free rewards and / or comps for your play. Each casino rewards different comps at different levels, but here’s a partial list of some of the things you can get for free just because you’re a member of the club and gamble:
- Free meals
- Free spins
- Free hotel rooms
- Cash back
- Free flights
- Free vacations
- Free flights
2 – Look for Coupons
Coupons are often overlooked by gamblers, but they can add a great deal to your playing experience and bankroll. When you sign up for the player’s club, ask if they have any coupons.
You can also find coupons on the casino’s website, in their newsletter, and in gambling fun books and publications. You can even find coupons online by searching for the name of the casino and the word coupons.
Casino coupons come in all shapes and sizes, so you never know what you might find until you look. The most common coupons give you free spins or a set amount of free slots play.
But you can also find coupons for a free ace on a blackjack hand and other game specific perks.
3 – Use a Strict Budget
Unless you’re a professional advantage gambler, you should treat the casino as entertainment. This means you should have some sort of budget for your night out, just like if you go to a movie, out to eat, or shopping.
Decide on the maximum amount of money you’re willing to lose on your casino visit and stick to it. The best thing about going to the casino as a form of entertainment is that sometimes you can leave with more money than you start with. In the long run the odds are good that you’re going to lose.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t win sometimes.
The important thing is to limit your losses. If you want to play longer while keeping your losses low, play games with a low minimum bet. You can play video poker for a quarter a spin in most places. When you combine a low bet with slower play, which I cover later, you can play for hours on a small bankroll.
If you’re taking a trip to Atlantic City or Las Vegas that lasts for more than a day, split your bankroll up over the total number of days you want to gamble. If you have a bad day and lose that day’s bankroll, take a break until the next day. Enjoy a show or take in some of the sights.
4 – Take Breaks
You should take frequent breaks while gambling for 2 reasons:
- You usually sit while gambling, and it’s good to get up and move around. It helps get your blood flowing and is good for your health. It also helps give your mind a few minutes to relax.
- You aren’t gambling while you’re on a break. Casino games are designed to take your money eventually. This means that the more you gamble the more likely you’re going to lose money.
I suggest taking at least a 10 minute break every hour you play. Get up and walk around and try to clear your mind. It’s even better if you can walk outside and breathe some fresh air.
5 – Eat Healthy
Most people don’t eat a healthy diet overall. You can find study after study that shows on average humans are eating worse and creating more health issues every year.
And when we go to the casino we tend to forget about eating well and concentrate on gambling.
When you eat healthy, it helps your body and mind. You can play longer, and you can think better. Instead of eating a candy bar or fast food, eat a salad or other healthy meal before going to the casino. When you take a break from gambling, find something healthy at the buffet or restaurant.
It also helps to drink more water. Water helps flush out toxins and keeps your mind sharper. You can combine a healthy meal or diet with exercise to stay at the top of your game longer.
Consider exercising before heading to the casino and take a brisk walk when you take breaks from playing. You might not notice the difference the first few times, but in the long run you can play longer and make better decisions.
6 – Don’t Drink Too Much
Have you ever thought about why many casinos give players free drinks?
Casinos know that when players drink, they tend to bet more and make poor decisions. When you bet more and make poor decisions, you lose more.
Considering the cost of drinks, getting free drinks is a type of comp. If you enjoy drinking, you should take advantage of the free drinks, but don’t overdo it. If you drink too much while gambling, you fall into the casino’s trap.
One of the best ways to avoid gambling too much when you drink is to only take a set amount of money to the casino. No matter what happens, when you reach this set limit, you stop gambling. Ignoring your limit and heading to the ATM when you lose defeats the purpose.
The other option is to go to the casino with someone who knows how to handle you when you drink too much. Tell them before you start when you need to quit, or better yet, give them your money so you have to get it from them.
7 – Play Slow Games
One of the worst things gamblers can do is sit down at a slot machine and press the spin button as fast as possible. Some machines let players take over 900 spins per hour.
This is bad because slot machines are designed to keep a percentage of the money wagered on the machine. The more you bet, the more you lose on average.
If you want to play slots, play slower. Take a second or two between each spin. The same is true for video poker and other types of electronic machines.
The other option is to play games that are slower by nature. Pai Gow Poker and Mississippi Stud Poker are both slow games. Traditional poker games like Texas holdem are also slower. Old fashioned keno is one of the slowest gambling games of all time, followed closely by bingo.
But if you play them online or electronically, they play much faster.
I understand that you’re going to the casino to gamble, but when you play fast paced games you’re going to lose more in the long run. Combine slower games with low minimum bets and you can play longer. If you play online, you can control how fast you play most games, so start tracking how fast you play.
8 – Play Games with the Best Odds
Modern casinos have hundreds of options for gamblers. Hundreds of slots machines and dozens of table games offer different gaming experiences and different chances to win. You can use strategy to reduce the house edge when playing some games, like blackjack, but many games can’t be changed using strategy, like slot machines.
I’ve already talked about playing slow games or playing slower. I’ve also discussed making smaller bets. When you can combine both of those with casino games with a low house edge, or the best odds, you give yourself the best chance to win. You also can play longer on the same bankroll.
Here are some of the best games to play when you’re looking for the best odds. The percentage listed is the house edge when using the best strategy:
- Baccarat banker bet 1.06%
- Blackjack – from .28% up to 3% depending on the rules
- Craps 1.36% on don’t pass
- Pai Gow Poker 1.46%
- Video Poker – Game and pay table specific, with some Deuces Wild and Jacks or Better games at less than .5%
If you want to play blackjack, learn the best rules and the proper strategy. Video poker players need to learn the best strategy for the game and the best pay tables. Baccarat is simple, because the only strategy is to always bet on the banker. If you play craps, only bet on the don’t pass line and back it with full odds.
9 – Learn a Basic Blackjack Card Counting System
If you can find blackjack games with good rules and learn how to play perfect basic strategy, you can often play with a house edge of less than a half percent.
But you can go one step further and reduce the house edge to zero, or even play with a small advantage in the long run.
Most players are afraid they can’t learn how to count cards or are too lazy to try. With a low house edge, you only need to swing the odds a small amount to be able to play a break even game. You don’t need to memorize every card when you count cards. With just a little bit of practice, almost anyone can learn how to do it.
10 – Learn to Play Poker
Poker, like Texas holdem, Omaha, and 7 card stud, offer one of the rare opportunities to gamble without fighting the house edge. The casino or poker room makes money by taking a small percentage of each pot, called a rake.
But the main battle is between you and the other players at the table.
This means that if you’re a better player than the other players at the table on average, you can win enough to cover the rake and turn a profit.
Becoming a long term winning poker player isn’t easy, but with enough study and hard work you can learn how. You can also look for games with poor players where you have a better chance to win. Start playing at low stakes games and don’t play for more money before you build your skills.
11 – Play Online to Save Expenses
You don’t need to leave your home to enjoy most gambling games. You can travel to a land based casino, but you also have hundreds of options to gamble online. Any time you can play at a casino without traveling you save on expenses.
In many cases, you also can find games with a lower house edge online. The trade off is you need to make sure you find a safe place to play, and you have to learn how to make deposits and withdraw your winnings.
Of course, you can play online and in land based casinos, so you can have the best of both worlds. When you start looking for places to play online, don’t get too excited about all of the different bonus offers. Getting a bonus to play online is nice, but make sure you read all of the terms and conditions to make sure you understand the rules and regulations.
12 – Play the Same Games for Free
Did you know you can play most casino games for free?
Most online casinos offer their games for free to anyone who wants to play. You can play popular table games like blackjack, craps, and roulette, dozens of video poker variations, and hundreds of slot machines online.
If you just want to play and don’t feel the need to gamble, you can play a much as you want without risking any money. Click on a link to any online casino we list on this site, sign up for a free account, and you can start playing your favorite casino games for free in just a few minutes.
13 – Host a Family and Friends Casino Party
One way to have a fun and safe casino experience is to host your own family and friends casino night. You can play for free or for small amount that everyone can afford. I’ve enjoyed parties like this where everyone got a set number of chips and whoever ended the night with the most got a door prize. I’ve also played where all the chips were worth 25 cents or $1.
You can take turns dealing or even bring in a few outside dealers if you want to spend the money. Many games can be played with nothing more than a deck of cards and some chips, but if you have access to a craps table and / or a roulette wheel you can give players more options.
Popular family and friends party games include blackjack, poker, Let it Ride, and baccarat. You can also play more traditional games like PO*KE*NO and Tripoley.
14 – Shop for Better Comps
As you learned in the first tip, if you’re going to gamble, you should sign up for the player’s club so you can earn free comps for your play. The next step is to shop around for better comps. If you have the choice between playing at two or more casinos, talk to each player’s club and find out which one is willing to offer you the best rewards.
Some clubs are secretive about their rewards levels, but it never hurts to ask for more. The more you wager, the more power you have to request better comps. Don’t make the mistake of missing out on better rewards just because you don’t ask for more. The worst they can do is say no, so you don’t lose anything by asking.
15 – Never Chase Losses
Many gamblers fall into the trap that they’re due for a win or change of luck. When they start losing, they keep betting more and more to try to get back to even or ahead. While this works sometimes, in the long run chasing losses is going to leave you broke.
The odds on the games don’t change. Just because red has come up four times in a row on roulette, it doesn’t mean that the next spin is more likely to be red or black. The odds of red or black are exactly the same on every spin, and nothing that happened in the past changes the odds.
Stick with a set bankroll for your playing session. If you’re having a bad night at the tables or on the slot machines, simply stop playing and hope your luck turns around the next time you play.
16 – Bet on Sports
When you think about gambling at the casino, do you think about sports betting?
Many casinos have sports books where you can bet on your favorite teams, and you can place bets online in many areas.
While most sports bettors lose in the long run, if you study enough, you might be able to beat the sports book.
But even if you don’t become a long term winner, you can bet on sporting events without risking a great deal of money and the games usually take at least a couple hours.
Instead of risking thousands at the blackjack table or on the slot machine for a few hours of entertainment, make a $20 wager on a football game and root for your team to win.
You might even be able to make sports bets with friends and family so you don’t have to pay the fee sports books charge for bets. When you bet at a sports book you usually have to risk 10% more than you can win, called the vig. When you find other people to bet with, you can avoid the vig.
17 – Understand the Rules
You need to make sure you know all of the rules for every game you play in the casino. Most games have simple rules, but even a simple game like blackjack has many rules variations. You also need to know and understand the different house rules for each game and in each casino where you play.
If you have questions about the rules of a game, ask the dealer or ask to speak to a floor person. When you play online, ask the support department when you have questions.
Never assume the rules are the same from one casino to another. It’s also a good idea to read the rules and regulations for jackpots and special events and contests. Many poker players have been disappointed when they could have won part of a bad beat jackpot by not knowing the rules.
It’s fun and exciting to relax and gamble at your favorite casino.
But there’s no reason you can’t try to increase your chances to win while you play.
Use these 17 tips for casino players of all experience levels to have more fun and increase your chances to win.
